3 rules to follow when it comes to your skincare routine
The world of skin care can be overwhelming! There are a plethora of products to choose from and different opinions of what is best and what is the devil!
I have come up with what I believe to be the top 3 rules for skincare!
1. Keep it simple – Your skincare doesn’t need to consist of a million different products. You just need the right ones, quality over quantity and to use what is right for your skin
Make-up balm remover, oil based cleanser or micellar water to remove make-up. NO WIPES!
Cleanser – If you have dry skin then use hydrating cleanser to remove any other impurities, if you have oily skin use a soap free cleanser – go for gel cleanser or creamy ones – NOT FOAMING! EVER! You don’t want to strip the skin even when you want to due to acne or oil.
Exfoliate – but not everyday, keep it to twice a week, to remove the dead skin cells
Toner – you can use a toner, but it’s not essential.
Serum – Start thinking about using a serum, I like adding a serum into my face routine & neck for anti-aging purposes and to look brighter. Such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin c for the day and a retinol for the night.
Eye cream – Then an eye cream again for anti-aging and brightness. Not a necessity.
Moisturise & SPF – Lastly a face moisturiser & SPF for the day – at night I swap the day cream out for a hydrating night cream.
2. Keep it hydrating – what to look for in your skin care, active ingredients:
NO ALCOHOL – it strips the skin
SLS FREE – soap substance that strips your skin, your skin shouldn’t feel squeaky clean or dry after washing
Niacinamide – reduces redness & inflammation – it is an ingredient that is suitable for everyone even those with sensitive skin
Hyaluronic acid – keeps your skin hydrated, key component in aging formulations, Also good for acne but not directly.
Glycerin – allows the skin to retain moisture, relieving dryness and can refresh the skin’s surface
Ceramides – help to create a barrier and maintain the skins integrity. Prevents trans epidermal water loss – basically prevents water leaving the skin.
Salicylic acid (SA) – has a keratolytic action (exfoliating action) which helps to clear pores, blackheads and white heads, can regulate the skin cells – GOOD FOR PEOPLE WITH OILY/ACNE PRONE SKIN
LHA a derivative of SA which is slightly gentler – is an anti-aging ingredient, works in a similar way as (SA), promotes skin brightening and firming, increases natural occurrence of hyaluronic acid and collagen
3. Always use SPF on your face when when its not sunny – You should always finish with an SPF even when it’s not sunny UVA rays still come through and penetrate your skin deeper than UVB rays and can penetrate through glass – the A stands for Aging. If you don’t protect your skin you’re going to accumulate damage in the skin which can lead to developing cancerous skin lesions later in life. Even when it’s overcast, up to 80% of the sun’s rays are still being absorbed by your skin.
